Recipe Tips and Notes

  • Sauce and broiling are both optional. I like the texture better when broiled, but the drumsticks are fine to eat right out of the instant pot.
  • Let the chicken rest before serving or tossing in the sauce. This will help the juices redistribute.
  • Use a trivet in your Instant Pot so that the chicken doesn’t burn.

I will definitely be adding this recipe to my “use often” list! I do admit to ad-libbing the seasoning a bit due to not having exact items on hand. And I also turned the chicken in the broiler a couple of times so it would be even all the way around.

I suggest using foil when placing in the oven. I followed the recipe and the parchment paper was in flames

This was the first recipe I made with my new InstaPot. I was scared to death to use it! But the well written directions eleveated apprehension in using it. The taste is OUTSTANDING! The broth left was delicious and I’ve frozen it for future use. My husband just loved this recipe, and since it’s just the two of us, I removed the chicken from the rest of the drumbsticks, made chicken soup and froze the rest for future use. You can feed a full house with this delicious meal and not spend your life in the kitchen.

Well I must say I was very disappointed. The seasoning for the drums was not nearly enough. I had to triple the amount to cover 5 Lbs of chicken legs.

How long for frozen drumsticks? I plan on adding all ingredients except broth and bbq sauce to a ziplock for a “dump and go” freezer meal for busy days. Plus I always buy frozen chicken because it’s cheaper.

FAQs

Do you need to add water when cooking chicken in an Instant Pot? ›

You can cook chicken breasts in whatever size instant pot you have. Just make sure you add at least 1 cup of liquid, and then place the chicken in the pot in a single layer.

How many drumsticks can you cook in an Instant Pot? ›

For the dry rub: Paprika, oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Chicken drumsticks – You'll need about 10 pieces for this Instant Pot chicken recipe. I typically account for 2 pieces per adult. Olive oil & butter – These two fats work together for the initial browning of the outside of the chicken legs.

Can you overcook chicken in the Instapot? ›

Yes, it is possible to overcook chicken in an Instant Pot because you are unable to check the temperature of the chicken throughout the cooking time.

Why are my chicken drumsticks tough? ›

Overcooking might play a role in your chicken's tire-like texture. Leaving chicken in a pan, oven, or grill for just a little too long can suck the moisture right out and leave you with a dry, rubbery bird. Without moisture, the protein fibers in the chicken become elastic.

Why is my chicken rubbery in Instant Pot? ›

Rubbery Instant Pot shredded chicken is usually the result of overcooking the meat.

How do you keep chicken from getting tough in Instant Pot? ›

The key to getting perfectly juicy boneless chicken breasts is to cook them on a trivet, above the liquid. I find that this results in a better texture than cooking them on the bottom of the pot. I also think their texture is best when you quickly release the pressure, rather than letting it naturally release.

Does chicken get more tender the longer you pressure cook it? ›

This dinner staple cooks up perfectly every time in the Instant Pot. You can aim for firm but juicy chicken for cubing, or let it cook a little bit longer for tender shredded chicken.

Can I put chicken on top of each other in Instant Pot? ›

For even cooking stack your chicken breasts on top of each other cross ways. Or if possible lay the chicken in one even layer on the trivet. If you don't have a trivet you can lay your chicken directly in the bottom of the pot with the liquid.

How do you know when chicken is cooked in an Instant Pot? ›

Open the pot, then use a digital thermometer to check the thickest part of a piece of chicken—it should be at least 165oF. If the chicken is not quite up to temperature, put the lid back on with the vent closed and cook for another minute or two.

Is it better to pressure cook or slow cook chicken? ›

So can a Crock-Pot cook better chicken than an Instant Pot? Well, it really depends on what you're making. The Instant Pot cooks chicken much faster than its non-pressure counterparts, but the resulting texture isn't going to be the same as what you'd get with a slow cooker or Dutch oven.

What happens if Instapot is overfilled? ›

Overfilling your Instant Pot can affect the pressure that builds up inside, so you might end up with a mushy meal, or one that doesn't cook properly.

How long should I pressure can raw chicken? ›

Once you're getting 4 “jiggles” per minute, or your dial gauge has come up to pressure, start your timer and process the chicken. If you're canning pint jars, you will process them for 1 hour 15 minutes (75 minutes). If you're using quart jars, you will process for 1 hour 30 minutes (90 minutes).

How to make Gordon Ramsay chicken drumsticks? ›

Heat the oven to 400F. Lightly oil a large baking dish. Season the drumsticks with salt and pepper and arrange in the dish in a single layer. Drizzle over a little olive oil and bake in the hot oven for 20 minutes.

How do you keep drumsticks from drying out? ›

Skin-on chicken legs: Skin helps keep the chicken moist while cooking and bakes up crisp. Olive oil: For coating the chicken for even browning.

How do I make my chicken soft and not chewy? ›

The best tenderizer though, is a salted yogurt marinade. The salt has the same effect as in a regular brine, but the lactic acid in the yogurt further tenderizes the meat. A 15-minute marinade with one cup of yogurt and one teaspoon of salt makes for the most tender chicken breasts imaginable.

Can you pressure cook chicken without water? ›

Can a Pressure Cooker Be Used Without Water? It is important to never run a pressure cooker without water. It cannot cook your food properly without water, and the pressure will build to such an extent that the lid, pressure valve, plugs, and hot food could be thrown all over the kitchen.

Do you need water to cook meat in Instant Pot? ›

Cooking the Meat Under Pressure

Add liquid to the Instant Pot, such as broth or water, to create steam. Place a trivet or the Instant Pot rack into the pot and put the browned meat on top. Seal the Instant Pot and select the appropriate cooking mode (e.g., “Meat” or “Pressure Cook”).

Are you supposed to put water in an Instant Pot? ›

Your Instant Pot needs liquid to work. If there's not enough, your pot won't be able to create enough steam to build pressure. About 1 cup is the minimum amount of liquid, so if you're cooking a recipe that will absorb water, like rice or beans, you'll need even more.
