San Gabriel Valley high school football top 30 rankings: Charter Oak stays at No. 1 (2024)

The San Gabriel Valley area high school football rankings for teams covered by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Pasadena Star-News and Whittier Daily News.

FOOTBALL TOP 30

1. Charter Oak (9-0)

Charter Oak’s Richie Munoz outlasted Bonita’s Daniel Andrade in an old-fashioned shootout last week by throwing for 429 yards and four touchdowns and running for score in a wild 45-42 victory. The Lancers are undefeated and can clinch at least a share of the Mountain View League title with a win over Alta Loma this week. They almost certainly will be in Division 3 for the playoffs.

2. La Serna (8-1)

The Lancers received some good news after a 53-6 blowout victory over El Rancho last week. Prior to the game they were projected by CalPreps to be in Division 2 for the playoffs that start next week. But after their win they slipped into Division 3, probably due to schedule strength. Being in Division 3 would probably give them a better chance to win in the postseason. No matter what, it’s been another super season for coach Andy George and crew.

3. Bishop Amat (6-3)

After falling behind by multiple touchdowns for three consecutive weeks, two of which ended in losses, the Lancers bounced back last week with a 42-21 victory over Notre Dame and moved into a tie for third in the Mission League. The Lancers are almost certainly destined for the Division 2 playoffs. Aiden Ramos had a big night in the win with four touchdowns.

4. Pasadena (8-1)

The Bulldogs continue to run through the Pacific League, as they beat Crescenta Valley 41-0 last week. They’re won their four league games by an average margin of 43 points. They’ll try to clinch the league title outright with a victory over rival Muir on Wednesday in the annual Turkey Tussle at the Rose Bowl. Only question is, can Muir make it a game?

5. St. Francis (7-2)

Devyn Turner scored five touchdowns, including two late TDs, to help the Golden Knights surge past St. Paul for a 49-20 victory. The win gave them at least a share of the Angelus League title. It was the fifth straight victory for St. Francis, which is hoping to match last years’ run to the Division 4 championship game. This year they’re looking like a Division 3 candidate.

6. Bonita (6-3)

The Bearcats have been unlucky down the stretch. They had a chance to beat Charter Oak in the final minutes last week, but a turnover cost them in a wild 45-42 loss. The Bearcats and QB Daniel Andrade played well, with Andrade throwing five touchdown passes and for over 300 yards. The Bearcats have another tough one against Ayala, but seem certain to make the playoffs, even if they need an at-large berth.

7. La Habra (5-4)

The Highlanders’ 35-20 victory over Sonora clinched at least a share of the Freeway league title as they improved to 4-0 in league. They can win the title outright this week. Once again, after early-season struggles, which included losses to Upland and Bishop Amat, the Highlanders have turned it around late in the season and will be one to watch in the playoffs. They could be in Division 6 or 7.

8. Northview (7-2)

The Vikings clinched a share of the Valle Vista League title with a 42-20 victory over Diamond Ranch. The Vikings figured to play San Dimas next week for the outright league title, but San Dimas’ shocking loss to Los Altos means the Vikings can add another league title. The Vikings’ two losses were to Charter Oak and Bonita.

9. Damien (3-6)

The Spartans are back in win-or-go-home mode after getting routed by Rancho Cucamonga 42-13 to end their modest two-game winning streak. Fortunately for the Spartans, their season is not finished. To reach the playoffs, it’s simple: They have to beat Etiwanda this week to secure second place and a playoff berth. If they lose, and they’re most likely out of the playoffs.

10. Monrovia (7-2)

The Wildcats clinched at least a share of the Rio Hondo League title with a 45-15 win over San Marino, and they are starting to look like a playoff contender. The Wildcats should win the league title outright this week and then hope a tougher nonleague schedule will play dividends in the playoffs. Last year Monrovia started 10-0 and lost in the first round of the playoffs.
